Antonio Conte has leapt to the defence of his players after Roy Keane branded Chelsea’s squad ‘unprofessional’ for their behaviour in recent seasons.

The 48-year-old Italian boss has come under increasing scrutiny as the season has wore on, despite leading Chelsea to the title in his debut season at Stamford Bridge last term.

There were reports of Chelsea’s top stars ‘downing tools’ before Jose Mourinho lost his job back in 2015 and Manchester United legend Keane slammed the ‘shocking’ treatment of the club’s recent managers.

Speaking about speculation surrounding Conte’s future on ITV Sport, Keane said: ‘These Chelsea lads are so unprofessional.

‘When they go and win the league and the last few years, they downed tools under different managers. It’s shocking behaviour.’

However, Conte insisted that his players have been fully committed to the cause this season.

Asked if he agreed with Keane’s strong criticism, Conte responded: ‘No, as you know very well, in every moment I underline the commitment of the players.

‘I think that in this year and a half we’ve had a great mentality.
