Britain sets Monday deadline for Northern Ireland budget

The British government has set Monday as the latest deadline for Northern Ireland’s political parties to reach an agreement to restore a government, a U.K. government spokesperson said Friday.

If Sinn Féin and the Democratic Unionist Party fail to make a deal, Britain will bring in legislation to set a budget for the province, Reuters reported.

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and has been without a regional administration since January, when the previous power-sharing agreement collapsed.

This collapse has raised the prospect of direct rule being imposed from London, potentially destabilizing a delicate political balance in the British province.
