Salah Abdeslam, one of the key suspects behind the November 2015 Paris attacks, is to be transferred back to his native Brussels for a trial over a shootout in Belgium last year.

Abdeslam and accomplice Sofiane Ayari are due to face charges of “attempted murder of several police officers in a terrorist context” during a trial set for December 18-21.

Belgian police found Abdeslam and two helpers, Mohamed Belkaid and Sofiane Ayari, on March 15, 2016, after a prolonged search.

The encounter led to a gun battle during which Belkaid shot at police, while Abdeslam and Ayari fled. Six policemen were hurt and Belkaid was killed.

Abdeslam was arrested three days later near his home.

The trial caps months of cooperation between investigators in Brussels and Paris, where the terrorist is currently being held.
