Spanish Senate approves direct rule over Catalonia

The Spanish Senate approved Friday a government plan to impose direct rule over Catalonia, shortly after the Catalan parliament voted for independence from Spain.

Earlier on Friday, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy addressed the Senate to set out his reasons for using Article 155 of the constitution to suspend Catalonia’s regional autonomy.

“We’re facing a challenge of unprecedented dimensions,” Rajoy said. “What is being debated here is whether Spain, regarding an issue that affects its stability and its integrity, has the right to defend itself by making use of the constitution and the laws.”
