Manchester Uniteds board do not want to sanction expensive moves for Willian and Ivan Perisic because of their age, reports say.
Jose Mourinho is desperate to bring in a right winger this transfer window, but his efforts have been frustrated by Uniteds hierarchy.
World Cup star Perisic and Chelseas Willian were Mourinhos top choices, but the board are blocking moves for the duo.
The Daily Record claim Mourinho would be happy to sign either attacker, but United do not want to spend big on a player who will be 30 next year.
Willian turns 30 next August, while Perisic will celebrate his 30th birthday in February.
Neither forward would come cheap with Chelsea turning down a £53million offer from Barcelona for Willian.
Perisic could cost upwards of £60m after a superb showing from the Croatian in the World Cup, at which his country reached the final.
Mourinho is trying to apply pressure on United chiefs to sign at least two more players, but the boss is concerned with progress considering he asked for a right winger last summer.
There is also the issue of Anthony Martials impending exit and Mourinho would want a replacement for the Frenchman, as he considers United are already light when it comes to cover for Romelu Lukaku.
Mourinho hinted at tension between him and the club by suggesting his transfer requests were going unheard.
I would get two more players, Mourinho told ESPN. One thing is what I would like. Another thing is what is going to happen. I would get two more players.
United have less than a month to conclude their transfer business as the window slams shut on August 9.
