Real Madrid are ready to reinvest the massive windfall they received from Cristiano Ronaldos departure and are working on a mammoth deal for Inter Milans Mauro Icardi.

The Spanish giants allowed Ronaldo to move to Juventus after nine hugely successful years at the Bernabeu, but they are currently lacking firepower up front and have yet to replace the Portuguese superstar.

While the deadline for Premier League transfers closed on Thursday evening, clubs in Spain are still free to complete deals until the end of August.

And, according to Spanish outlet Libertad Digital, Real bosses have flown to Rome to hold decisive talks with Icardi over a summer switch.

The deal is being driven by Icardis agent and wife, Wanda Nara, who is desperate to convince Real to sign the Argentine forward.

Real are conscious of the need for more firepower up front, but their most pressing concern is in midfield with Luka Modric desperate to leave the club.

Los Blancos have already allowed Mateo Kovacic to join Chelsea on a season-long loan, and compatriot Modric is also itching to leave having already agreed terms with Inter.

Reals presence in Italy is in part due to Modrics desire to move to San Siro, with Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic targeted as a potential replacement.

The Serbian is one of the most in-demand players in European football but a host of Premier League clubs baulked at his asking price; with the window in England now closed, Real have a virtually free run at the talented midfielder.
