The Wallabies are set to wear the Indigenous jersey in the Rugby World Cup after Rugby Australia lodged a formal request with World Rugby.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika revealed RA had applied for Australia to wear the hugely popular jersey in two games in Japan in September and October this year.

Cheika told the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team fundraising dinner in Sydney on Wednesday that the request was to use the jersey in Australias pool game against Uruguay and in a potential semi-final.

The Dennis Golding-designed jersey has only been worn twice, against New Zealand in 2017 and England in 2018. It is so popular among the playing group that Wallaby Will Genia last year called for it to be worn for every Test.


Test veteran Kurtley Beale, an Indigenous Australian, said last year it could be a powerful weapon for the Wallabies at a World Cup.
