ROME — Italy has had a record number of deaths linked to coronavirus in just 24 hours — 627 — health authorities said Friday evening.
The total death toll has spiked to over 4,030 since the outbreak began at the end of last month.
The numbers of cases has jumped by 4,670 in one day, with 2,380 in the northern region of Lombardy (the outbreaks epicenter), Angelo Borrelli, head of the Civil Protection Agency, said at a daily press briefing.
Overall, 37,860 people have tested positive, 2,655 are in a critical condition, 16,020 are hospitalized and 19,185 are in self-isolation.
Health authorities said the average age of the deceased is 79. The Civil Protection Agency chief also pointed out that in almost every case those who died had other diseases. However, there are multiple cases across Italy of severe infections hitting people between 30 and 50 years of age.
