At least eight people were pronounced dead in an attack by a university student in the Russian city of Perm, law enforcement agency says.

The agency, which handles major crimes, said six other people were injured in the attack.

Some students have jumped out of windows to evacuate the building

Police managed to arrest the suspect shortly after the attack at Perm State University, east of the capital, Moscow.

The police also identified the shooter as a student at the university. It has opened a murder probe into the incident.

Local media footage captured at the scene showed students fleeing the attack, with some seen jumping from first-floor windows to escape the university building before running to safety.

Other students locked themselves in rooms, while the university urged those who could leave the campus to do so.

Russia has strict restrictions on civilian firearm ownership but some categories of guns are available for purchase for hunting, self-defence or sport, once would-be owners have passed tests and met other requirements.

School and university shootings are relatively rare in Russia.

On May 11 this year, a teenager in Kazan shot seven children and two teachers to death at a school. Since then, President Vladimir Putin tightened gun law ownership.
