EBN- Flash floods hit north Queensland over the weekend, and thousands of people were evacuated.
Local authorities affirmed that thousands of people were evacuated, while thousands more remain trapped in their homes.
The authorities pointed out that hundreds remained trapped on a hospital roof. Nine people – including a sick child – spent the night on the roof of the hospital after emergency crews were unable to reach them.
The heavy rains are considered the Australian region’s worst-ever flood driven by a tropical cyclone.
Footage swept social media platforms, showing a crocodile in the middle of a town and people fleeing in boats.
No casualty toll has been released so far.
Queensland Premier Steven Miles told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation the natural disaster was “about the worst I can remember”.
“I have been talking to Cairns locals on the ground… and they say they have never seen anything like it,” he said.
“For someone from far north Queensland to say that, that is really saying something.”
According to the local authorities, the flash floods will continue over Monday and Tuesday.
The municipal authorities also warned of the outbreak of several rivals in the town.
In 2011, the rain had stopped days before the Brisbane River peaked and authorities had warned for several days of flooding downstream.
