London, Europe Brief News – The actress Amber Heard has come to the fore once again after receiving widespread support.
An open letter was sent to Heard to support her after losing a defamation suit against Johnny Depp, her former husband, in June this year.
The letter was signed by more than 130 personalities and groups including feminist group the National Organization for Women and Women’s March.
The support letter condemned harassment the Aquaman star has faced since the trial. Groups that address sexual assault awareness and domestic violence also signed the letter.
“Much of this harassment was fueled by disinformation, misogyny, biphobia and a monetized social media environment where a woman’s allegations of domestic violence and sexual assault were mocked for entertainment,” the letter said.
“The same disinformation and victim-blaming tropes are now being used against others who have alleged abuse.”
Depp had sued Heard for $50m (£38.2m) over an article published in The Washington Post in December 2018, in which she referred to herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse”.
Heard’s column did not mention Depp by name, but he argued it was an example of “defamation by implication” because parts of the column referred to allegations of abuse she made against him following their break-up in 2016.
Amber Heard, 36, said she was “heartbroken” and felt “disappointment beyond words” after Depp was awarded $15m (£11.9m) by the court.
Both Depp and Heard have testified that the other had been physically violent with them during the course of their relationship.
The defamation case brought by actor Johnny Depp against his ex-wife has come to an end, but the court of social media seems to be still ongoing.
