EBN- At least one person was killed on Wednesday after two explosions went off near the Supreme Court in the Brazilian capital, Brasilia.
A man committed suicide with a bomb” outside Brazil’s Supreme Court after trying to enter the building on Wednesday, officials said, raising security concerns five days before the country hosts a G20 leaders’ meeting in Rio de Janeiro that will be followed by a state visit to the capital Brasilia by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The two explosions occurred 20 seconds apart at around 7:30 p.m. Brazilian time, Celina Leao, deputy governor of the federal district, told a news conference on Wednesday evening.
The first explosion went off in a car in a nearby parking lot, Leao said. Shortly after, another explosion went off in the plaza outside Brazil’s Congress, Supreme Court and presidential offices.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was not at the site at the time of the explosion.
Liao said the suspect tried to enter the building housing the Supreme Court, but failed.
Pictures from the scene showed the body of one of the victims in the square known as “Three Powers Square”.
Firefighters confirmed one person was killed, although they have yet to remove the body.
Meanwhile, police said they had not yet definitively identified the dead man because they feared there was additional explosives on his body, and were working with bomb disposal teams to comb the area.
