EBN- All accidents dominated the scene at the end of this year, as December recorded 12 plane crashes, including “catastrophic” accidents that were classified among the worst in recent years.
Sky News Arabia monitored the 12 incidents that were circulated in the media during the month of December 2024:
December 6: Florida Airplane
One person was killed after a plane crashed in Indian River County, Florida , on Friday, Dec. 6, authorities said.
December 11: Texas Airplane
A twin-engine helicopter crashed on a Texas highway and split in two on Wednesday afternoon, damaging several cars and injuring four passengers who were taken to hospitals, authorities said.
December 12: New York Plane
One person was killed after a small plane crashed on a highway along the New York-Connecticut border, closing the road for an extended period, according to a police source and officials.
December 17: Hawaiian Plane
A Kamaka Air Cessna 208 Grand Caravan crashed shortly after takeoff near Honolulu on Dec. 17, killing both pilots. The crash occurred during a training flight, and investigators are looking into what caused the loss of control.
December 18: Argentina plane
In Argentina, a Bombardier BD-100-1A10 Challenger 300 overshot the runway at San Fernando Airport, hit obstacles and caught fire. Both pilots were killed in the fiery crash.
December 22: Papua New Guinea Incident
A Britten-Norman BN-2B-26 Islander crashed, killing all five on board. The wreckage was found the next day, prompting an investigation.
December 22: Brazilian plane
A small plane with 10 passengers on board crashed into shops in the centre of the tourist city of Gramado in southern Brazil on Sunday, December 22, with initial reports indicating no survivors, civil defence officials said .
“Unfortunately, initial reports indicate that there were no survivors among the plane’s passengers,” Eduardo Leite, the governor of Rio Grande do Sul state, where the city is located, said in a post on the X platform.
Authorities said the plane first hit a chimney of a building, then the second floor of a house before crashing into a furniture store, and that its debris also reached a nearby residential home.
December 25: Azerbaijani plane
The Azerbaijani Embraer SA190 was carrying 62 passengers and five crew members on a flight from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to Grozny, the capital of the Russian Chechen Republic, when it changed course to make an emergency landing in Kazakhstan .
The crash killed 38 people and rescued 29 others.
Azerbaijan Airlines said initial findings showed its plane that crashed in Kazakhstan on Wednesday was subject to “external interference.”
December 29: Korean Airplane
At least 96 people were killed in a plane crash at a South Korean airport on Sunday, Yonhap news agency reported.
The agency further said that a Jeju Air plane carrying 175 passengers and 6 cabin crew members veered off the runway and crashed into a wall at Muan International Airport in South Korea .
At least two people, one a passenger and the other a crew member, survived, firefighters said.
Reports said the accident was caused by a malfunction in the plane’s landing gear.
December 29: Canadian Airplane
Halifax International Airport in Nova Scotia, Canada, witnessed a terrifying emergency landing incident for an Air Canada plane on Saturday evening. This came after it suffered a malfunction during landing.
The plane made an emergency landing at Halifax International Airport after the landing gear failed, causing the plane to slide along the runway and catch fire.
December 29: Dutch plane
On Sunday, a Dutch plane veered off its runway at Oslo Airport in Norway.
The KLM Boeing 737-800 aircraft skidded off the runway at Oslo’s Torp Snanfjord Airport, south of the Norwegian capital, shortly after takeoff.
The flight was bound for the Dutch capital Amsterdam but returned to the airport due to what was described as a hydraulic problem, with no injuries to the 182 passengers.
December 29: Ras Al Khaimah plane
A light aircraft of Al Jazira Air Sports Club crashed off the coast of Ras Al Khaimah, killing its pilot and his companion.
