EBN – Mayor of Madrid, Jose Martinez-Almeida, urged all residents to remain indoors as they braced for heavy rainfall and storms. The severe storms also impacted other regions of Spain.
Maximum Red Alert
The national weather agency, AEMET, issued a maximum red alert indicating potential extreme danger in Madrid, Toledo, and Cadiz. AEMET warned that the region could experience as much as 120 litres of rainfall per square metre over a 12-hour period.
In response to the alert, Mayor Martinez-Almeida took to social media to advise the citizens of Madrid. The Mayor urged all residents to stay at home during this exceptional and abnormal weather situation.
Despite the looming dark storm clouds over the city on Sunday afternoon, many residents continued doing their usual activities.
However, some, like resident Manuel Loro, acknowledged the prudence of the red alert. Indeed, Loro expressed the view that refraining from using vehicles was the best course of action on this day.
The peak of the storm was expected around six o’clock in the evening.
Severe Flooding Reported Beyond Madrid
Madrid’s emergency services sent text messages to residents, warning them about the risk of flooding and advising against vehicle use.
In response to the adverse weather conditions, LaLiga postponed an evening match scheduled between Atletico Madrid and Sevilla in Madrid.
The inclement weather extended beyond Madrid, affecting regions like Alcanar in Tarragona, on Spain’s east coast. Emergency services confined residents to their homes due to severe flooding caused by 215 litres of rainfall per square metre.
