The Blaugrana and the Brazilian International ended the long-standing legal battle that started after the latter left the club with a world transfer record to the French club, announced Barcelona today.
Both sides dropped their claims, ending a 4-year legal battle.
PSG set a new record in the market, as they paid the €222m release clause of Neymar, who left the Camp Nou, amid the world’s astonishment.
The transfer made the 29-year-old the most expensive player of all time. The media uproar the transfer sparked caused both parties to sue one another, holding different claims.
Neymar started this legal war, claiming that Barcelona has not paid a bonus he was promised to be paid upon his contract renewal in 2016. The club, however, claimed a breach of the contract, leading the latter to sue the player.
That left a sour taste in the mouth of Neymar, who filed a new legal case in February 2020 concerning “contingency payments” after he came from Santos.
The court settled the issue down between the two parties in June last year, turning down the Brazilian claim and ruling that he pays the Spanish club €6.7m.
Meanwhile, the club filed a new legal case against their former player, claiming they overpaid him around €10m, as they returned to their 2015-financial documents.
“Amicable” is the club’s opinion on the situation, as both the player and the club dismissed their claims in an out-of-court compromise. It is worth mentioning that cases in total were three labour and one civil litigation.
The Joia put in 186 appearances with the Spanish club in four years, with 105 goals and six titles: Two La Liga, three Cope del Rey, one Champions League, and one Club World Cup.
While unconfirmed rumours circulated a possible return for the Brazilian to the Blaugrana, the first quashed such rumours by signing a new deal with PSG until 2025.
