EBN- Prince William, heir to the British throne said that the past year was the “hardest” of his life, after the British royal family went through a difficult period during which doctors diagnosed his father, King Charles, and his wife, Kate, with cancer.
The BBC and other British media reported that Prince William spoke at the end of his visit to South Africa about how he balances his duties as a member of the royal family with family time.
Asked about the past year, William said, “Honestly? It was a horrible year… I think it was the hardest year of my life.”
King Charles
King Charles is receiving treatment for cancer, which he was diagnosed with in February, but has recently travelled to Australia and Samoa.
His wife Kate, 42, underwent preventive chemotherapy for cancer this year, which she has previously described as “very difficult” for the family.
Earthshot Awards
William hosted the annual Earthshot Awards in South Africa, without his wife Kate, who is still recovering from chemotherapy, and said she was “doing well”.
“She’s really doing well, she’s been amazing all year, I know she’ll be really keen to make sure the night is a success,” William said of his wife’s condition ahead of his environmental awards ceremony in Cape Town.
He added that, as a family, they did what they could to help the environment.
“We do all the basic recycling, we make sure to reduce water usage, turn off the lights when we leave the house, things like that,” he continued.
Prince William launched the Earthshot Prize to find innovations to combat climate change and other environmental issues in 2020, inspired by US President John F Kennedy’s Moonshot project in the 1960s which led to the 1969 moon landing.
Five winners receive £1 million ($1.3 million) each year to fund their projects.
