New York, Europe Brief News – Several people have reportedly died after two military helicopters crashed in Kentucky.
Crew members were flying two HH60 Blackhawk helicopters during a routine training mission before the crash at Fort Campbell at around 10pm local time on Wednesday (3am on Thursday UK time), the military base has said in a statement.
A US army soldier at the scene has confirmed there have been multiple deaths.
Spokesperson for Fort Campbell military base said two HH60 Blackhawk helicopters had crashed during “a routine training mission”.
“The status of the crew members are unknown at this time,” they said.
“The command is currently focused on caring for the service members and their families.”
They further added the incident was under investigation and more information would be released as it becomes available.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said there are some fatalities.
“We’ve got some tough news out of Fort Campbell, with early reports of a helicopter crash and fatalities are expected,” Beshear tweeted. He also said state police and local officials are responding.
“Please pray for all those affected,” Beshear said in the message.
The Fort Campbell military base is located a short distance from Trigg County.
The helicopters involved are from the 101st Airborne Division, which is the only air assault division in the US Army and has been sent to conflict zones internationally.
