EBN – Ukraine has reported substantial advancements in reclaiming territory on its eastern and southern fronts during the past week. This comes as part of its ongoing counteroffensive against Russian forces.
Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar announced these developments in a televised statement.
According to Maliar, Ukraine has successfully retaken nearly 2 square kilometres of land surrounding the eastern city of Bakhmut.
This area had fallen under Russian control in May following a protracted conflict.
Maliar further elaborated on the achievements via the Telegram messaging app.
She disclosed that Ukrainian forces had recaptured an additional 4.8 square kilometres in the southern Tavria sector.
Counteroffensive Reclaims Key Areas
In her televised address, Maliar highlighted specific gains. These included the capture of sections of the Opytne village, located to the south of the eastern city of Avdiivka.
Maliar also noted progress near the village of Novomaiorske in the eastern Donetsk region.
Additional successes were cited in the vicinity of the villages of Andriivka and Klishchiivka, situated to the south of Bakhmut.
Since the counteroffensive started in early June, Ukrainian troops have reclaimed control of approximately 49 square kilometres around Bakhmut.
In the Tavria sector, the territory recaptured extends to over 256 square kilometres, Maliar reported.
However, the Ukrainian forces have encountered significant obstacles, including extensive Russian minefields and trench networks.
While these reports indicate notable progress in Ukraine’s counteroffensive, EBN has not been able to independently verify these claims.
Furthermore, Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022, typically refrains from commenting on Kyiv’s reported territorial gains.
