The regional elections due to be held in Spains Basque Country and in Galicia on April 5 have been postponed due to the coronavirus crisis.
The decision in the Basque Country, which was recommended by the regional governments legal advisers, was agreed with the leaders of all political parties in the area. A new date for the polls to choose the regions government is yet to be chosen, amid concerns that Spains 15-day lockdown to fight the spread of the virus could be extended.
Going ahead with the elections would have involved movement of people, gatherings of voters in indoor venues and various people coming into contact with the same objects, such as ballot papers, which could contribute to spreading the virus, the government said.
“Celebrating the elections in this context could be damaging for public health as well as for democracy and the free and normal exercise of the right to vote,” the legal advisers warned in their report.
