A historical overview of Chersonesos
The first inhabitants of Hersonissos are believed to have been the Minoans. After their decline, Hersonissos came under the rule of Letos. Hersonissos flourished during the Roman and first few centuries of Byzantine rule. The village built its own theatre, public bath and aqueduct.
The Roman theatre was destroyed in 1897 during a local event. Later, due to fear of pirate invasions, the inhabitants have to move further inland, leading to the foundation of Ano Hersonissos. Similarly, two other villages, Piskopiano and Koutouloufari, also appeared. The main source of the economy remained the export of olive oil and leather from the port, on which the livelihood of the inhabitants depended. Things changed after the 1960s when tourism discovered Hersonissos.
