EBN- If your child is being bullied, you should always intervene using the strategies above. But your preschooler can also learn ways to deal with bullying when it happens. This can help your child deal with any bullying in the future.
Here are some ideas for your child, as well as ways to explain the ideas to your child:
Teach your child to tell the bully to stop: “Confronting bullies calmly lets them know that what they’re trying to do isn’t working.” You can also role-play this situation with your child. For example, “Stop calling me stupid. I don’t like it when you say that.”
Teach your child to stick with other people: Say, “If you play with your best friends, the bully may not bother you because your friends will notice.”
Encourage your child to ask other children to get a teacher if he needs help. Other children will likely understand what he’s going through and can help him if he needs it. It’s okay for him to ask them to get a teacher.
Tell your child to tell the teacher, who can help them. The bully may not know that the teacher is helping them. Dealing with bullying can be difficult, but adults are always there to help.
You and your child can choose one or two ideas that your child feels comfortable using. Encourage your child to implement the ideas. This will help him or her feel more confident and less helpless in the face of bullying.
