Kyiv, Europe Brief News – Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence called on those living in Kyiv’s northern outskirts to make fire bombs to defend their capital “to neutralise the enemy”.
Overnight, the city was hit by blasts, with at least one block of flats damaged and several civilians injured.
As the second day of fighting began, Moscow – which is attacking from the east, north and south – appeared to have Kyiv firmly in its sights.
Clashes erupted between the two sides, with Ukrainian forces blowing up a bridge in an attempt to slow Russia’s advance. Western intelligence officials warned earlier that Russia was building an “overwhelming force” to take control of the city.
Thus, citizens in the northern Obolon district remained at home to avoid “active military operations”.
The Ministry of Defence had already appealed to the district’s residents on its Facebook page to “inform us of troop movements, to make Molotov cocktails [firebombs] and neutralise the enemy”.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier said Russia was seeking to “destroy Ukraine politically by destroying the head of state”.
“According to the information we have, the enemy has designated me as target number one. My family is target number two,” he said.
Day One of the Invasion
Russia launched its invasion by land, air and sea on Thursday following a declaration of war by President Vladimir Putin. An estimated 100,000 people fled as explosions and gunfire rocked major cities. Zelenskyy said 137 people died on the first day of the attack.
According to the reports that are coming about casualties include some Ukrainian civilians and soldiers along with Russian troops.
Volodymyr Zelensky said “My country would not give up it’s freedom”. Moreover he Tweeted “ Russia has embarked on a path of evil, but Ukraine is defending itself”.
Ukraine announced martial law in the country and broken all the diplomatic ties with Russia. It says weapons are available for anyone who wants them.
