Michigan, Europe Brief News – Ford is aiming to become a leader in the manufacturing of Electric vehicles goes back to the company’s earliest days. In the last 100 years, Ford managed to produce various plug-in concepts and a few production models but the company’s EV efforts never paid off.
History of Electric Vehicles
In 1903, Henry Ford was aware of the fact that Thomas Edison was experimenting with battery technology for vehicles. But Ford started working to build a low-cost electric car in 1914.
In the initial production of Electric vehicles, the batteries were placed under the seat on the first couple of electric cars. The cars were good enough to cover 50 to 100 miles on a single charge.
Projections of Ford
Today, the company is looking to produce 16 new pure electric vehicles in the coming three years. This speaks a lot about how much effort the company has put into the EV over the years.
Now after more than 100 years, Ford announced that it will run its electric vehicle and internal combustion divisions as two different businesses. This is just another effort from Ford to focus more on the technological aspect.
The Automaker declared on Wednesday that the aim is to own two different but strategically interdependent Auto businesses. Ford Blue is focusing on traditional combustion engines and the Ford model which will produce electric cars.
Jim Farley, CEO of Ford said “We are going all in, creating separate but complementary businesses that give us startup speed and unbridled innovation Ford Model e together Ford Blue’s industrial know-how volume and iconic brands like Bronco, that startups can only dream about”.
Ford is already working on its electric vehicles like the Ford GT, Mustang Mach-E SUV and F-150 lightning pickup and it operates an EV division in China.
Different roles will be assigned as Ford Blue will be responsible for providing hardware engineering and manufacturing capabilities for the entire company. Ford Model e will work on software and connected vehicle technologies and services.
Ford is projected to own more than 2 million Electric Vehicles produced annually by 2025, representing about a third of its global volume.
Jim Farley will play both roles as being ahead of Ford Model e and CEO of Ford Motor Co. However, President of Ford’s Americas & International Market group, Kumar Galhora will become President of Ford Blue.
