Geneva, Europe Brief News – Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioners for refugees said that more than 1.5 million refugees from Ukraine have fled the country to get shelter in the neighbouring countries in the space of 10 days. He suggests that this is the fastest-growing refugee crisis seen in Europe after WWII.
He tweeted “ More than 1.5 million refugees from Ukraine have crossed into neighbouring countries in 10 days—the fastest-growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War Two”.
Tens of thousands of Ukrainians headed to the borders of neighbouring countries carrying their children after Russian forces pressed and threatened to capture Ukraine’s capital Kyiv.
The UN Refugee Agency said that more than 150,000 people have run for their lives from Ukraine to Poland, Romania and several other neighbouring countries to find a safer place to live until everything calms down.
Some of them walked through the night while others fled by car, bus, train creating lines miles long at the border crossing. The people on the other side of the border were waiting for their family and friends to reach the border safely.
Shabia Mantoo, the Spokeswoman of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said “This may go up, it is changing every minute. It is very fluid and changing by the hour”.
European Countries Facilitating Refugees
The whole of Europe is stood up to facilitate the refugees fleeing from Ukraine. Europe used to stay quiet when conflicts occurred in other parts of the world especially in the Middle East or African countries.
A massive number of Ukrainian were heading towards the Polish border. Poland is the country where almost 2 million Ukrainian already settled and worked in recent years. They moved there when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.
Poland Government Officials said, “ More than 1 million Ukrainians have crossed the polish-Ukrainian border. Poland announced its border open to fleeing Ukrainians without the requirement of a Visa”.
Victor Orban, Hungarian Prime minister announced that the Hungary border is open for the legal citizens of Ukraine. The country has all the facilities to ward of refugee crisis in times of utter crisis.
Mantoo said “ Most Ukrainians heading to neighbouring Poland, Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia but some even fled into Belarus. Some are trying their way to get to other countries of Europe”.
