Paris, Europe Brief News – More than 200,000 new Covid cases were reported in France in the last 24 hours, official sources said.
In recent days, an average of 120,000 new cases have been detected per day.
This digit “is expected to slightly exceed 200,000 Tuesday evening,” Health Minister François Braun said.
“We are currently experiencing a seventh wave. The Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants, which are now the majority viral strains, are causing an epidemic resurgence throughout the country. Cases are increasing in recent days” he explained.
According to the minister, who relies on scientific forecasts, the epidemic peak could be reached within two or three weeks.
In France, according to the latest report from the health authorities as for the COVID-19 pandemic, about 1,862,279 cases have been reported.
In France, 16,638 (+360) people are at the hospital, including 978 (+25) serious cases in ICU.
Nearly 15 million people died as a result of Covid-19 in the first two years of the pandemic, the World Health Organization said.
That figure is 2.7 times higher than the 5.4 million deaths that governments around the world reported to the global health agency for that period.
The WHO analysis used mathematical modeling to calculate “excess mortality” for 2020 and 2021 — ascribing to the pandemic deaths that were over and above what had been seen in the years leading up to the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
