EBN – Greece is grappling with a catastrophic flood crisis, with ten lives lost so far.
Furthermore, hundreds of residents in Thessaly’s villages remain stranded and in desperate need of assistance.
Firefighters and the army are working to rescue those stuck due to the floods, according to authorities.
More than 2,850 individuals have been successfully rescued, as reported by fire spokesperson Yannis Artopios.
However, many residents in the vicinity of Karditsa, Palamas, and Trikala are still cut off from the outside world.
While they are not considered missing, the current official count of missing persons stands at six, Artopios emphasised.
The village of Palamas remains submerged, and emergency services are striving to reach and aid those trapped within their homes.
The situation is equally grim near the town of Larissa, situated just a few kilometres to the east.
In response to the escalating crisis, civil protection authorities issued a dire warning on Friday evening. They urged residents to evacuate a Larissa district that was under imminent threat from rising floodwaters.
Water Supply Emergency in Volos
The city of Volos, located approximately 330 kilometres north of Athens, is grappling with significant water supply issues.
Pumping stations and a substantial portion of the water distribution network were severely damaged during the violent storm.
The Greek Ministry of Health has issued recommendations to citizens, urging them to stop consuming water in the affected region. Cases of gastroenteritis have already emerged, with concerns mounting that the situation may deteriorate if there’s no adequate water supply.
Elena Riza, a professor of epidemiology at Athens Medical University, stressed the urgency of the situation. He demanded that authorities distribute a minimum of 2 litres of potable water to every resident.
Storm Daniel Unleashes Devastation in Greece

This event follows a summer marred by devastating forest fires in Greece, which claimed the lives of over 26 individuals.
Additionally, neighbouring countries Turkey and Bulgaria have experienced the wrath of torrential rains in recent days.
