Mariah Carey returns to her normal life
Mariah Carey said she is back to work after a “tough few weeks” following the deaths of her mother Patricia and sister Allison on the same day last month.
Carey, 55, posted a photo on Instagram on Sunday, September 8, 2024, of herself preparing to perform her song “It’s Like That” as part of a series of upcoming international shows. The five-time Grammy winner captioned the post: “Back to work. It’s been a tough few weeks but I so appreciate everyone’s love and support and can’t wait to see my fans in China and Brazil. Mariah Carey’s mother and sister die
People magazine reported the deaths of Mariah Carey’s mother , Patricia, at the age of 87, and her sister, Allison, at the age of 63, on the same day in August. The Grammy-winning singer said in an exclusive statement to the magazine: “My heart is broken because I lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister also lost her life on the same day. I am grateful that I was able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away. I appreciate everyone’s love, support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.
Mariah Carey , 55, was born to Patricia—who was an opera singer and vocal coach—and Alfred Roy Carey, who died of cancer in 2002 at the age of 72. The couple welcomed Allison, Mariah, and Morgan. The parents later divorced when Mariah was 3 years old.
Her relationship with her mother, sister
Mariah Carey’s relationship with her mother was not a normal one, but rather a complicated one throughout her life, as she explained in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey , in which she wrote: “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother was filled with contradictions and competing truths. It was never black and white—it was a rainbow of emotions.” Mariah continued in the book, saying: “Our relationship is a thorny rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment. A complicated love that binds my heart to my mother’s heart.”
But despite this relationship, which contained many mixed and contradictory feelings, Mariah maintained a good and balanced relationship with her mother. In 2010, they reunited on a special episode of ABC’s Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You, and performed a festive mother-daughter duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus.” Mariah also dedicated part of her memoir to Patricia, writing: “My mother, who I believe did the best she could despite everything that happened, I will love you the best I can, always.”
In a 2022 interview with Gayle King, the singer said she was “definitely” affected by her mother’s criticism when she was growing up. She added that she always credited her mother with exposing her to music.
The singer’s relationship with her sister, Allison, was also complicated, and the star wrote in the memoir that it was, at least at the time, “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have contact with her or Morgan.” Allison sued Carey for $1.2 million after the memoir was released for “enormous emotional distress,” calling her “vindictive.
