EBN- Obesity among children has become a serious problem because it can lead to various health consequences, psychological and emotional disorders in the future.
One of the main causes of obesity in children is an imbalance of energy intake and expenditure, because excessive consumption of high-calorie carbohydrate and fat foods, as well as overeating in the evening, causes weight gain.
Bad eating habits and irregular meals also play a role. One of the causes of obesity in children is lack of physical activity, because the more time a child spends in front of a computer screen and the less he or she does sports, the greater the risk of developing this problem,” says pediatric endocrinologist Ruslana Akhmedova.
According to her, lack of sleep also affects weight gain, as it has been shown that children who sleep less than required have higher levels of ghrelin – the appetite-stimulating hormone, which promotes weight gain.
“Lack of sleep can lead to metabolic problems and the development of obesity,” she says.
The doctor points out that obesity has many health risks, including high blood pressure, gallstones, gastroesophageal reflux disease, as well as problems in adulthood and the musculoskeletal system.
Obesity prevention
“Obesity in adolescence can cause psychological and emotional disorders such as depression and eating disorders,” she says. “That’s why it’s important for parents of overweight children to immediately consult doctors to get qualified medical care.”
According to her, obesity prevention should start in early childhood. This is done by following a balanced diet and practicing regular physical activity. It is also necessary to involve the child in active games, walking in the fresh air and doing sports.
“Children should be encouraged to eat healthy foods – fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy products and low-fat foods. It is also important to avoid fast food and eating dinner late,” she says.
