EBN- Former US President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100, the Carter Center said Sunday.
Carter was a Georgia peanut farmer who faced problems during his presidency, including a poor economy and the Iranian hostage crisis, but he mediated peace between Egypt and Israel and later won the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work.
He was also a Democrat and served as president from 1977 to 1981 after defeating then-Republican President Gerald Ford in the 1976 election.
He was unable to win a second term, as he was defeated by his Republican rival, Ronald Reagan, the former actor and governor of California.
Carter lived longer than any other American president, and he had a better reputation as a former president than he had as president, a status he was aware of.
His only term in office was marked by the conclusion of the 1978 Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, which brought some stability to the Middle East.
But his presidency was marked by economic recession, steadily declining popularity, and the embarrassment of the Iran hostage crisis, which consumed his final 444 days in office.
Carter (1977–1981) is widely regarded as one of the most remarkable public figures in modern history, for his contributions as a statesman, humanitarian, and advocate for peace and human rights.
While his presidency was marked by both achievements and challenges, his post-presidency legacy has cemented his status as a globally admired figure.
