EBN-Legendary actor Morgan Freeman sparked widespread interest on social media during the 2025 Oscars ceremony, after he was seen wearing a black glove on his left hand.
Although Freeman, 87, kept his hands behind his back for most of his TV appearances as he paid a touching tribute to his longtime friend and co-star Gene Hackman, who died under mysterious circumstances last month, some viewers noticed that he was wearing a black glove on his left hand, raising questions on social media.
Morgan Freeman has previously revealed that he suffers from fibromyalgia, a chronic condition that causes severe muscle and joint pain, for which there is no cure. He developed the condition as a result of nerve damage he suffered after a serious car accident near his home in Charleston, Mississippi, in 2008. He had to be rescued by emergency personnel and airlifted to the hospital.
Morgan Freeman, who was 71 at the time of the accident, reportedly spent four days in the hospital with a broken arm and elbow. In a 2012 interview with Esquire magazine, Freeman revealed that the accident also left his hand paralyzed, causing excruciating pain that ran down his hand and arm.
What is fibromyalgia?
The exact cause of fibromyalgia is still unknown, but it is thought to be linked to abnormal brain signals that change the way nerves transmit pain signals throughout the body.
Symptoms include increased sensitivity to pain, muscle stiffness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and mood swings. There is no cure for the disease, but health services recommend a combination of exercise, psychological therapies, and medications commonly used to treat anxiety and depression.
In 2010 Freeman spoke about wearing a compression glove to help improve blood flow in his hand. “I had nerve damage and it wasn’t getting any better,” he told People magazine. “I can’t move my hand. If you don’t move your hand, it’s going to swell up.”
Freeman has appeared wearing the glove on several occasions, including presenting the 2023 Oscars alongside actress Margot Robbie, as well as in his latest role in the Paramount+ series Special Ops: Lioness.
According to health experts, fibromyalgia symptoms often begin after an event such as physical injury, surgery, infection, or severe psychological stress. In other cases, symptoms gradually increase over time without any triggering cause.
Women are more likely to develop the condition than men. Many people with fibromyalgia also suffer from tension headaches, temporomandibular joint disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and depression.
Fibromyalgia symptoms can vary over time, and may suddenly improve as brain signals regulate themselves. However, the condition can also get worse just as quickly, making it more disabling.
