Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden should not hold any debates with President Donald Trump, the Houses top Democrat argued on Thursday.
Mainstreaming what had been written off as a fringe push, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told reporters at her weekly press conference: “I dont think there should be any debates.”
“I do not think that the president of the United States has comported himself in a way that anybody should, and has any association with truth, evidence, data, and facts. I wouldnt legitimatize a conversation with him, nor a debate in terms of the presidency of the United States,” she added.
Pelosi, the third-in-line to the presidency, asked reporters not to tell Biden about her position.
But if he asked, she would tell him he shouldnt “dignify that conversation with Donald Trump,” she added. She suggested having each candidate appear separately and have “conversations” about a range of subjects.
While some Democrat influencers and activists have proposed Biden skipping debates with the Republican president, who is running for a second term, none were anywhere near Pelosis stature.
The current debate schedule, set by the self-described non-partisan Commission on Presidential Debates, would see Trump and Biden debate on Sept. 29 and twice more in October.
Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Bidens running mate, and Vice President Mike Pence would meet once.
