The US Envoy to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield condemned the UN Human Rights Council (UNHCR) as “antisemitic.”
Thomas-Greenfield slammed, what she said, the UNHCR’s frequent criticism of Israel.
She went on to say the UN body is under the control of “antisemitic” countries from the Middle East.
“It is also appalling that the Council has one standing agenda – and that’s Israel – when there are so many other countries that are committing human rights violations, and we see it every day in the news,” Thomas-Greenfield said.
Thomas-Greenfield’s fierce attack on the UN institution came following the council’s decision to investigate possible abuses in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem.
The US position came hand in hand with Israel’s rejection of the UN investigatory commission.
Israel’s former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the decision as “shameful.”
“Today’s shameful decision is yet another example of the UN Human Rights Council’s blatant anti-Israel obsession.”
However, the Palestinian Authority welcomed the decision that “reflects the determination of the international community to move forward in the path of accountability, law enforcement, and protection of Palestinian human rights.”
For its part, the UN body stressed that “there is no doubt that Israel has the right to defend its citizens and residents. However, Palestinians have rights too.”
