The EU will work with the Taliban-run Afghan government only if it respects fundamental human rights.
This includes women’s rights and preventing terror operations on Afghanistan’s soil, said the EU’s foreign policy chief on Tuesday.
Josep Borrell laid out the EU’s position in a statement after an emergency meeting with the EU foreign ministers.
They discussed the Taliban’s rapid seizure of the Afghan capital, Kabul.
Additionally, He said the EU will continue to assist the Afghan people to resolve the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the country.
The EU Conditions
The statement said the Taliban has to meet the conditions of the peaceful and inclusive settlement.
Furthermore, respect Afghanistan’s international obligations and the fundamental human rights of all Afghans, including women, youth and minorities.
Also, commit to fighting corruption and preventing terrorist organizations from operating on Afghanistan territory.
“The EU calls on the Taliban to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law in all circumstances,” Borrell said
Borrell urged all parties to allow safe access to humanitarian aid to Afghan women, men, children and IDPs in need.
The EU will support Afghanistan’s neighboring countries in coping with the expected negative outflow of refugees and migrants crossing borders.
“The EU prioritizes evacuation of its staff and Afghan helpers from the Afghan capital,” Borell said.

“We have to get in touch with authorities in Kabul. The Taliban have won the war, so we will have to talk to them,” he said at a news conference after the meeting.
Borrell said a discussion to prevent potential migration disasters and humanitarian crises is necessary.
Borrell cited the fall of Kabul as the Taliban’s most prominent geopolitical case since Russia’s invasion of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014.
“It will have an impact on the geopolitical balance of the world,” he said.
This situation means the EU would have to work more closely with countries like Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Russia and China.
