Berlin, Europe Brief News – A gunman died, and several people were injured in a shooting in an auditorium at the University of Heidelberg, in South-West Germany.
A single shooter reportedly opened fire in a lecture hall, resulting in several injuries.
A police spokesman said that the perpetrator, described as a young man, was dead.
Officers did not reveal any further information over the motive for the incident, nor the exact number of the casualties.
Police in the southern Germany city have said a large operation is underway at a university in Heidelberg.
“Police and emergency services are on the scene,” Mannheim Police said in a tweet.
The university’s press office declined to give any details on the shooting and referred all inquiries to police.
However, German news agency dpa cited unidentified security sources as saying that the gunman killed himself.
It also reported, without citing sources, that the gunman is a student himself. Security officials say initial indications are that he didn’t have any political or religious motive.
Heidelberg is located south of Frankfurt and has about 160,000 inhabitants. Its university is one of Germany’s best-known.
However, school and university shootings are rare incidents in Germany.
In September 2021, eight people died in an attack by a university student in the Russian city of Perm.
Police managed to arrest the suspect shortly after the attack at Perm State University, east of the capital, Moscow.
The police also identified the shooter as a student at the university. It has opened a murder probe into the incident.
