EBN – Activists from the group known as the “Last Generation” vandalised Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate on Sunday. They sprayed orange and yellow paint on the columns of the historic monument, located at the heart of the city.
The group sought to emphasise their demand for a complete cessation of fossil fuel usage by the year 2030.
According to Berlin police, members of the Last Generation executed this act of protest by spraying the columns on the east side of the Brandenburg Gate with orange paint from fire extinguishers during the morning hours.
Police officers on the scene also observed the operation of a hydraulic lift near the gate. Indeed, they intervened to prevent the protesters from climbing the iconic building.
Protesters Arrested
All 14 individuals involved in the demonstration were subsequently arrested, and an official investigation into property damage has been initiated.
The Last Generation is a Germany-based faction affiliated with the A22 network, which also includes the UK’s Just Stop Oil.
Their protests have garnered significant attention in Germany, primarily through the use of road blockades.
In such roadblocks, the activists would resort to glueing themselves to the street surface.
These actions have prompted a heightened response from law enforcement agencies across Germany’s federal states.
Brandenburg Gate Spray-Painting
The Last Generation shared images on social media of their spray-painting action and reasserted their commitment to their cause.
“We will not stop our protest unless a pivot is initiated,” they proclaimed in a statement posted on X. “We have to exit oil, natural gas and coal by 2030 at the latest.”
Germany has an ambition of reaching a net-zero carbon footprint by the year 2045.
However, it has come across obstacles in achieving its yearly emission reduction objectives over the last two years.
Consequently, it affirmed the urgency of the climate crisis and the necessity for more radical solutions to fight it.
