Several areas in both Afghanistan and Pakistan were struck by an earthquake today, Saturday, with a magnitude exceeding 5 on the Richter scale.
The German Research Center for Earth Sciences stated that an earthquake measuring 5.7 degrees shook the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan on Saturday. The center added that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 195 kilometers.
Furthermore, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit different areas of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwestern Pakistan on the same Saturday.
The Pakistani Meteorological Department stated in a press release that residents felt tremors in the regions of Batagram, Swat, Kurram, and neighboring areas, as reported by “The Nation” newspaper in Pakistan.
As of now, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage in these regions.
In March of last year, at least 9 people were killed and 44 others were injured in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province after a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Indian regions.
On June 22, 2022, more than 1000 people were killed and tens of thousands were displaced after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit the impoverished province of Paktika. It was the deadliest earthquake in Afghanistan in nearly a quarter of a century.
