U.S. ( Europe Brief News): Elon Musk has publicly expressed regret for his social media attacks on former U.S. President Donald Trump, signaling a potential shift in their feud.
Musk did not say which specific criticisms he regretted when he left his position as director of the Department of Government Efficiency last month.
“I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week,”
Musk said in a post on his social media platform X early on Wednesday.
“They went too far.”
Following a string of remarkable accusations on Trump, including the unsupported allegation that his administration withheld information on Jeffrey Epstein in order to hide the president’s ties to the late financier and convicted sex offender, Musk has expressed contrition.
Musk publicly split from Trump last week over his “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” calling the package of massive tax cuts and spending increases a “disgusting abomination.”
Musk had been one of Trump’s most influential supporters during his reelection campaign and the first few months of his presidency.
Two of the most powerful men in the world engaged in a public verbal sparring match after Musk posted a barrage of criticisms of Trump and the Republicans’ spending plans.
Musk, who contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to Trump’s campaign for the presidency, also stated that he was in favor of his impeachment and asserted that the president would not have been elected without him.
In his most scathing criticism, Musk asserted that the “real reason” the so-called Epstein files had not been made public was because Trump was “in” them.
The accusation was called an “unfortunate episode” by the White House.
Trump said that the “easiest way” to reduce spending would be to revoke government contracts and subsidies given to Musk’s businesses, which include the electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla and the rocket company SpaceX, during the back and forth between the two men.
Trump stated in an interview with NBC News on Saturday that he had no interest in repairing his connection with Musk and that he believed it was finished.
“I have no intention of speaking to him,”
Trump said.
Additionally, Trump threatened Musk with “very serious consequences” if he complied with requests to back primary challenges against Republicans who supported his hallmark measure, which is currently pending in the US Congress.
By telling reporters that they had a “great relationship” and wishing him well, Trump seems to have softened his stance against his old ally on Monday.
Prior to expressing regret, Musk had taken actions that seemed to be intended to ease tensions between the two men.
The South African-born businessman reposted numerous of Trump’s social media postings praising his immigration crackdown and denouncing violence in Los Angeles, while deleting a number of X tweets criticizing the administration, including his allegation of ties to Epstein.
What prompted Elon Musk to publicly express regret over his Trump comments?
Elon Musk officially apologized for his assaults on Donald Trump on social media, saying that some of his posts—such as an unsupported allegation that Trump was connected to unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files—went “too far.”
His apology after a bitter and widely reported feud that began when Musk criticized Trump’s tax and spending measure, calling it a “disgusting abomination.” Trump openly ended their strong friendship with Musk and threatened “serious consequences” as the disagreement worsened.
After the severe public backlash and contentious accusations, Musk’s apology seems to be an effort to defuse the situation and mark a potential easing of hostilities.
