EBN – The European Parliament has formally endorsed Iliana Ivanova as the newly appointed European Commissioner for Innovation and Research.
The plenary vote saw a majority of 522 EU lawmakers voting in favour, with 27 voting against, and 51 abstaining.
Ivanova Takes Over
Iliana Ivanova, a 47-year-old Bulgarian, was nominated for this crucial role following the departure of Mariya Gabriel. The latter assumed the position of Bulgaria’s foreign affairs minister in May.
Ivanova’s appointment arrives at a pivotal juncture in Brussels, as the legislative term approaches its conclusion. This leaves limited time for the initiation of fresh initiatives before the upcoming European elections slated for June next year.
“Thanks for your trust!” Ivanova stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter), celebrating her appointment.
She also expressed gratitude to the honourable members of the European Parliament for their positive vote on her appointment.
Presentation Before European Parliament
During her interaction with MEPs, Ivanova outlined her vision to propel the EU into a leading position in innovative technologies.
She also presented her plans to bolster EU investments in research and innovation (R&I) , and cultivate educational opportunities and skills.
Notably, Ivanova will assume responsibility for overseeing Horizon Europe, the EU’s flagship program endowed with €95.5 billion, dedicated to funding R&I efforts designed to invigorate economic growth and enhance industrial competitiveness.
Additionally, she will be at the helm of prominent EU educational programmes, including the widely celebrated Erasmus+ initiative.
Iliana Ivanova’s ascendancy to the role of European Commissioner for Innovation and Research is expected to inject fresh momentum into the EU’s aspirations for technological excellence and global leadership.
