The social network, Facebook, officially changes its name to ‘Meta’ as it strives to be a ‘metaverse company’.
Thus, the company said the change was part of its bet on a next digital frontier, the “metaverse.”
CEO Mark Zuckerberg and a variety of other executives led the Connect 2021 keynote. Much of the time was spent diving further into the details of what Facebook Reality Labs is envisioning with its mixed reality metaverse.
That includes how the platform could offer new ways to experience work, play, exercise, entertainment, and much more. Notably, Zuckerberg said the company aims to have 1 billion metaverse users in ten years.
As part of this, it’s time for us to adopt a new company brand to encompass everything that we do. To reflect who we are and what we hope to build. I’m proud to announce our company is now Meta, he further said.
Facebook to Hire 10,000 EU Workers
Facebook has earlier declared intention to hire 10,000 workers in the European Union to develop a so-called metaverse.
Moreover, a metaverse is a new computing platform where people exist and communicate in shared virtual spaces.
The company said in a blog post earlier Sunday that those high-skilled workers will help build “the metaverse.” It is a futuristic notion for connecting people online that encompasses augmented and virtual reality.
“The metaverse has the potential to help unlock access to new creative, social, and economic opportunities. And Europeans will be shaping it right from the start,” the blog post reads.
“This investment is a vote of confidence in the strength of the European tech industry. It is the potential of European tech talent,” the company said.
The announcement comes as Facebook deals with the fallout of a damaging scandal and faces increased calls for regulation to curb its influence.
