EBN- Spanish officials said Wednesday that seven people were missing after heavy rains caused flash floods in the south and east of the country, disrupting air and rail travel.
Images broadcast on Spanish television showed floodwaters sweeping through the town of Letor in the eastern province of Albacete, sweeping cars away, according to AFP.
Milagros Tolon, the central government representative in Castilla-La Mancha, told Spanish television that emergency services, backed by drones, were searching for six people missing following flash floods.
Police in the town of L’Alcudia in the eastern region of Valencia also said they were searching for a missing truck driver.
“I am following closely and with concern the reports of missing persons and the damage caused by the storm in recent hours,” Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez wrote on Twitter, urging people to follow the authorities’ instructions.
“Be very careful and avoid unnecessary trips,” he added.
Spanish airport operator ENA announced that 12 flights scheduled to land at Valencia airport were diverted to other cities due to rain and strong winds, and 10 other flights were cancelled.
The Valencia municipality decided to suspend studies and sports matches on Wednesday and keep parks closed.
The railway operator ADIF has suspended all train services in the Valencia region “until the situation returns to normal”.
A high-speed train carrying 276 passengers derailed in the southern region of Andalusia, the regional government said in a statement, with no injuries reported.
