Sports ( Europe Brief News): Former BYU women’s basketball forward signs professional contract with Czech Republic’s KP Brno, the university confirmed in a Tuesday announcement.
Emma Calvert is on her way to the other side.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to play professional basketball overseas and represent BYU,”
Calvert said in a statement.
“My coaches have all helped prepare me for this opportunity and I can’t wait to show the Czech Republic what I can do while representing BYU and its values.”
Calvert played in 119 games throughout her four years with the Cougars, starting 71 of them. She averaged 8.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game, and she made 48.2% of her field goal attempts.
Calvert scored 12.6 points per game as a senior, which was second on the team, and averaged 5.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks, all of which were career highs.
Calvert also has 138 blocked shots, which puts him fifth in BYU program history.
“We are thrilled to be a part of Emma signing her first professional contract,” BYU head coach Lee
Cummard said in a statement.
“She has worked hard and is now seeing the results of that hard work and a great college career. Her opportunity comes with a team in a great city that plays both internationally in the Eurocup and in the Czech league. KP Brno has expectations to win, and win a lot. We are excited to support Emma this upcoming season.”
Before coming to BYU, Calvert was a local star at Fremont High School, where she won Deseret News Ms. Basketball and assisted the Silverwolves in winning the Utah 6A state championship in 2021.
Calvert joins several other former BYU women’s basketball players who are competing abroad, including Lauren Gustin (Australia), Maria Albiero (Brazil), and Tegan Graham (Germany).
What skills did the BYU forward bring that made her a fit for KP Brno?
Emma Calvert, a former striker for BYU, was a good fit for KP Brno because of her broad skill set. She showed excellent defensive, rebounding, and scoring abilities while attending BYU, all of which are advantageous for professional play.
Her athleticism, basketball IQ, and forwarding experience fit in nicely with KP Brno’s competitive goals in the Czech league. These qualities probably played a part in the club’s choice to sign her in order to bolster their roster and aim for success in the following seasons.
Emma Calvert, a former forward for BYU women’s basketball, is expected to make a substantial contribution to the team’s success, according to KP Brno.
