EBN- German Defence Minister and Social Democrat Boris Pistorius described the results of his party’s primary election as “tragic and catastrophic”.
It’s a devastating, catastrophic, tragic result,” Pistorius told ARD television. He congratulated the CDU/CSU on their election victory, saying the democrats needed to unite.
“I see my role as the person who takes over the leadership of the party if it comes to starting negotiations on forming a coalition with Friedrich Merz,” Pistorius added.
He also pointed out that “it is up to Friedrich Merz to carry out the task of forming a government,” saying: “We have always been ready for negotiations, and we are ready now.”
Friedrich Merz is expected to become the country’s next chancellor if he succeeds in forming a coalition government in the coming weeks.
The Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union bloc, led by Friedrich Merz, topped the German Bundestag elections with 29%, an improved result compared to the 2021 elections, according to exit poll data from the social institute Infratest.
In contrast, the Alternative for Germany party’s results doubled, coming in second with 19.5%.
The Social Democratic Party, led by Scholz, fell to 16.5%, its worst result since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949. The Green Party was estimated to have won about 13.5% of the vote.
