Middle East (Europe Brief Newspaper): At least 60 people were killed in Israeli strikes across Gaza, including displaced civilians near Palestine Stadium, health staff at Shifa Hospital report.
The hospital said a strike struck their tent in Muwasi in southern Gaza, killing six more people.
The strikes, which started late Friday and lasted until Saturday morning, coincided with US President Donald Trump’s announcement that a ceasefire deal would be reached in the coming week.
“We’re working on Gaza and trying to get it taken care of,”
he told reporters in the Oval Office on Friday.
The war in Gaza was sparked after Hamas launched its attack on Israel in October 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251 people.
Some 50 hostages remain in Gaza, with fewer than half of them still believed to be alive.
More than 56,000 Palestinians have been killed during the war, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.
What is the impact of civilian casualties on Gaza’s humanitarian crisis?
Nearly 70% of fatalities are women and children, meaning that the vast majority of those killed are civilians, shattering families and traumatizing communities. The enormous death toll leaves lasting social and psychological damage, particularly among youngsters.
Numerous people are now homeless and without access to basic services as a result of the destruction of residential neighborhoods, schools, hospitals, and other vital infrastructure caused by airstrikes and ground operations. Many survivors live in unsafe, overcrowded conditions after experiencing several displacements.
The health system is overburdened and underfunded, unable to handle the number of trauma and injury cases, and frequently devoid of essential medical supplies. Many facilities are no longer operational, putting lives at further risk, and medical personnel work in hazardous situations.
