Beijing, Europe Brief News – Kamila Valieva got a go ahead to participate again in the winter olympics as the court made a final verdict on her doping case.
The Court of Arbitration for sport (Cas) suggested that the athlete’s age and timing of test results played a crucial role in its ruling.
The Court is receiving a lot of criticism on how exactly the court allowed athletes with failed drug tests to participate on the world’s biggest stage.
The World Anti-doping agency (Wada) said “ It appears that the Cas panel decided not to apply the terms of the Code, which does not allow for specific expectations to be made in relation to mandatory provisional suspensions for ‘protected persons’ including minors”.
Valieva found positive for banned drug trimetazidine and in response to that Russian anti-doping agency suspended her provisionally. She challenged the decision and successfully turned it in her favour.
The International skating union, WADA and The International Olympic committee submitted an appeal against Rusada’s decision for lifting the ban on Valieva which was being turned down in Cas hearing.
Matthieu Reeb, Cas Director general said “ The athlete should benefit from the following exceptional circumstances: She is under 16 and a protected person under the Wada code”.
The Ruling said “ Serious issue of Untimely notification of the results of the failed test, which came during the games and nearly six weeks after she gave the sample had also played a part in its decision”.
Since Valieva is now set free to participate in the women’s individual figure skating competition where she seems to be a firm favourite for winning it.
On the other side, Wada has already issued a notification that it will be investigating athlete’s associates including Coaches, Doctors and Adults surrounding her.
The reaction to the ruling
The IOC previously mentioned that they would accept whatever the decision Cas made after the hearing whether we like it or not.
The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) said “ It was disappointed by the message this decision sends’ ‘.
On the other hand, The Russian Olympic Committee reacted to a ruling, saying “tomorrow the whole country will cheer on her and all our wonderful figure skaters in the individual competition”.
So now Valieva is all set to participate in the women’s event on Tuesday. She is likely to stand out with a series of flamboyant Quadruple jumps.
