EBN – A significant portion of a motorway in southwest Sweden suffered a catastrophic landslide during the night.
According to the local police, the collapse resulted in three individuals being transported to the hospital with minor injuries,
The landslide inflicted substantial damage to the motorway that connects Sweden’s Gothenburg with Norway’s capital, Oslo.
Impact Details
This destructive event occurred in the vicinity of the small town of Stenungsund, approximately 50 kilometres north of Gothenburg.
Detailed information provided by the Gothenburg Rescue Services revealed that the most severely affected areas of the landslide span approximately 150 by 100 metres.
However, the overall impact of the landslide extended across a sprawling area measuring around 700 by 200 meters.
The landslide had an effect on the area, impacting ten vehicles, a wooded area, a commercial district, and a restaurant.
Fortunately, a response involving fire personnel and a helicopter ensured the extraction of individuals from vehicles caught in the incident.
The Swedish news agency TT said that many vehicles and a truck got stuck in the holes of the landslide.
Landslide Investigation Underway
The specific reason for this landslide is still under investigation, according to the local police.
However, they have started inquiries to find out whether a nearby construction activity may have caused the collapse.
Authorities are examining any potential links between construction-related work and the unexpected geological disturbance.
However, at this time, there are no suspects in connection with the incident.
The Gothenburg Rescue Services have mobilised trained personnel and search dogs to comb the affected area for any potential hazards.
