Maggie Smith’s sons announce her death in a statement
Her sons Toby Stevens and Chris Larkin issued a statement announcing her death, saying: “It is with deep sadness that we have to announce the passing of Dame Maggie Smith.
She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27 September. The star was a very private person and was with friends and family at the end of the day. She leaves behind two loving sons and five grandchildren who are all devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their endless care and kindness during her final days.”
Maggie Smith’s Career
Maggie Smith is an international star who is famous for her roles in the Harry Potter film series. She has been dubbed the “British stage and screen legend” and has won two Oscars during her career for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1970, California Suite 1979), while receiving four other nominations and eight BAFTA awards.
Maggie Smith began her career in theater and received her first BAFTA nomination in 1958. In 1963, she was offered the role of Desdemona in Shakespeare’s masterpiece by Laurence Olivier. She played the role opposite Othello at the National Theater. Two years later, the play was adapted into a film starring the original cast, and Smith was nominated for an Oscar.
