EBN- Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suffered an injury during a trip to Luxembourg and was taken to a hospital for diagnosis and treatment, her office said in a statement on Friday.
Pelosi, 84, is the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House and was also a longtime leader of the Democratic Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“While traveling with a bipartisan congressional delegation in Luxembourg to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi was injured on official business and was taken to the hospital for evaluation,” Pelosi spokesman Ian Krieger said in a statement.
“Speaker Emeritus Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals. She continues to work,” Krieger added.
The spokesman did not reveal the nature of the injury or wound that Pelosi suffered.
Her political life
Pelosi stepped down as House Democratic leader in 2023 after Republicans regained control of the House, but she retains significant influence within the party. She served as speaker for two terms and is widely regarded as one of the most effective figures in modern congressional history.
Pelosi, 84, also won re-election to her House seat in the San Francisco area in November by a large margin.
She played a key role in passing Joe Biden’s sweeping $1 trillion infrastructure bill in 2022 and famously feuded with Donald Trump during his first four years in office, culminating in the moment she tore up the State of the Union address on national television in 2020.
Pelosi has been a prominent figure in Washington over a period spanning seven presidential administrations. She first served as speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011, then regained the job in 2019 after her party regained control of the chamber in the 2018 midterm elections.
