Istanbul, Europe Brief News – A new wave of cold weather and snowfall will hit Istanbul starting on March 9 evening.
The snow fall will last until early next week, the authorities warned.
“According to [Disaster Coordination Centre] AKOM data, Istanbul will be impacted by a cold snap of arctic temperatures as of Wednesday evening. Our teams will stay vigilant against the freezing cold and snowfall that are expected to be effective until the beginning of [next] week,” the Istanbul municipality said.
In January, an extreme weather storm caused major disruption to Turkey’s largest city, and forced the closure of Istanbul airport.
It was the second year in a row of unusually heavy snowfall.
It is an unusual occurrence for the southern Mediterranean countries, but the second time that it has happened in two years.
Turkey also suffered deadly and destructive wildfires last summer that lasted for days. These were put down to the new effects of climate change that increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather.
A new report on the impacts of climate change is expected to be released next week.
The report will be the most worrying assessment yet of how rising temperatures affect every living thing.
This will be the second of three major reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It will be the first since November’s COP26 summit.
The study will focus heavily on regional impacts as well as on cities and coastal communities.
