He instantly begins studying all of the writings of natural philosophers that he can lay his eyes on, and he explores them with passion. On discovering “the philosopher’s stone and the elixir of life,” his passion quickly changes.
Electricity is “the spark of life, the Promethean flame, and the light of the world,” as Frankenstein discovers. Even those involving “the creation of ghosts or devils,” his objectives begin well. In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, it all seems to spin outward after Victor starts thinking about nothing else and seeks the beauty of nature with an inhuman fixation.
