Russia ordered two fighter jets of the type Sukhoi Su-30 to escort two US B-1B strategic bomber jets.
The jets will fly over the black sea, said the Russian defense ministry on Wednesday.
The incident coincided with the US Secretary of Defense to the region.
The agile US planes are originally from the Cold War era and were designed to hold nuclear bombs and missiles.
However, the planes now carry regular payloads.
“Russian crews identified the aerial targets as two US Air Force supersonic strategic B-1B bombers,” the defense ministry stated.
“They were accompanied by two KC-135 refueling planes,” the ministry added.
The ministry also published video footage of the US aircraft in mid-air.
“After the foreign warplanes turned away from Russia’s state border, the Russian fighters safely returned to their home airbase.”
Moreover, it said that Russia’s aircraft flew strictly in compliance with the international airspace rules.
Lloyd Austin, the US defense secretary, said in his visit to Ukraine on Tuesday, that Russia is an obstacle to peace in eastern Ukraine.
He urged Moscow to end all activities that would cause instability in the black sea and Ukraine’s borders.
Russia blames Ukraine for the lack of progress in implementing a peace deal over eastern Ukraine. Ukraine denies the implementation.
A similar situation with a B-B1 jet happened on Sunday over the Sea of Japan.
This happened days after the US naval destroyer incident, which is also in the far east.
The US uses B-1B bombers in several NATO allies’ exercises across Europe.
The Air Force Magazine reported this month that the exercises encompass the Arctic, the Baltics and the Black Sea.
